Equipment

Rent or borrow equipment

At Fritidsbanken, you can borrow sports and leisure equipment for free — anything from skis and skates to football boots or a floorball stick. Most of the equipment is second-hand but in good condition. In Uppsala, Fritidsbanken is a collaboration between the Uppland Sports Federation, Region Uppsala, SISU Sports Educators, and Uppsala Municipality. You’ll find Fritidsbanken in two locations in Uppsala: Industristaden and Gottsunda.

Aktivt Uteliv is conveniently located in the outdoor recreation area in Sunnersta, where you can rent winter sports equipment for all ages.

Sledding and snowracing

Sunnerstagropen, located about eight kilometers south of central Uppsala, has a large sledding hill perfect for thrilling rides. When you need a break, there’s a café serving lunch and snacks, a cozy fireplace, and great barbecue spots at the bottom of the hill.

In summer, Hammarskog Nature Reserve is a popular destination for swimming and picnics – but in winter, it transforms into a paradise for sledding enthusiasts and thermos-hot chocolate lovers. The sledding hill lies just in front of the grand manor house, which hosts a café serving drinks and light meals on weekends. With views over Lake Mälaren and its beautiful setting by the manor, it’s hard to imagine a more picturesque place for sledding.

If you’re looking for something closer to the city center, Slottsbacken, just below Uppsala’s pink castle, is a well-loved spot for sledding right in town.

Cross-country skiing

Skiing – downhill and cross-country

For those who prefer gliding on skis, we recommend Sunnerstaåsen Outdoor Recreation Area. Here you’ll find the Uppsala Alpine Center, or Sunnerstabacken as locals call it. The area offers alpine slopes for skiing and snowboarding with green, blue, and red difficulty levels, a small freestyle park, and a 3.5 km illuminated trail for cross-country skiing. If you don’t have your own gear, you can rent equipment from Uppsala Alpine Center.

Fjällnora Outdoor Recreation Area is a paradise for outdoor activities just outside Uppsala. In winter, cross-country skiing (and long-distance skating) takes over as several ski trails are prepared on Lake Trehörningen. If you don’t have your own equipment, you can rent cross-country skis, long-distance skates, and kick sleds on site.

The Uppsala region offers several great cross-country trails – check out some of the most popular ones!

klosterparken

Klosterparken

Medieval Winter City

Snow-covered or not, Uppsala’s playgrounds are always open for children eager to play. One of the most unique is the Medieval Park in Uppsala city. Prison towers, a medieval infirmary, market stalls, houses, and striking lighting have transformed Klosterparken into a tribute to the Franciscan monastery that once stood here for centuries. Just a stone’s throw from Uppsala’s main shopping street, it’s the perfect spot to combine playtime with a bit of Christmas shopping!

Need a play break? Take a stroll along Almastråket – a charming little art walk for children that runs along Klostergatan, right outside the playground. From Fyrisån to the City Library, you’ll find five artworks celebrating art and literature for young readers.
