The Orangery in the Linnaeus Garden.

Linnaeus Garden

A perfect blend of nature and history awaits in the Linnaeus Garden in Uppsala. As one of the city’s most famous attractions, this lush reconstruction of Sweden’s beloved botanist’s 18th-century garden draws countless visitors each year. The plants in the garden were selected by none other than Carl Linnaeus himself, each chosen for its educational or scientific purpose. The beautiful orangery within the garden is well worth a visit in its own right.

Linnaeus Hammarby

For a more rural Linnaeus experience, we highly recommend a visit to Linnaeus Hammarby, located 13 kilometres outside the city centre. This is where the botanist spent his summers with his family, escaping what he described as the unhealthy environment of Uppsala city. It became both his sanctuary in nature and a place where he privately taught his students — reportedly dressed only in his nightshirt.

The Botanical Garden and the Tropical Greenhouse

The last of Uppsala’s three Linnaean gardens — together with the Linnaeus Garden and Linnaeus Hammarby — is the Botanical Garden. Unlike the other two, “Botan,” as the locals call it, is open all year round, offering unique plants through all four seasons. If you want to step inside and still enjoy lush greenery, make sure to visit the Tropical Greenhouse. Here, you can experience plants with all your senses — species that naturally grow on the savannah, steppe, desert, and in the rainforest. The temperature inside matches these climates, warming both body and soul on a chilly winter’s day.

The City Garden in Uppsala

The City Garden

Uppsala’s most central nature experience is the City Garden. Just a ten-minute walk from the train station, this green oasis offers something for all ages. Whether you’re walking the dog, enjoying a picnic, or simply relaxing amid tranquil park architecture while the children play on the imaginative playground, the City Garden is the perfect spot. You’ll also find the Parksnäckan music and theatre stage here, as well as the Studenternas sports arena just a stone’s throw away.

SLU’s Knowledge Park

20,000 square metres of both purpose and pleasure await you at Almas Allé 11 in Ultuna. Here, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has created a Knowledge Park where the plants, unlike in a traditional botanical garden, are arranged in a series of attractive and varied spaces rather than by species. SLU’s Knowledge Park is designed both as a demonstration site for the university’s research and innovations, and as a recreational area for visitors to enjoy.
