What makes Uppsala unique is its strong traditions, kept alive by generations of students. Many of these traditions date back hundreds of years but have evolved to fit modern times.
Valborg – The Highlight of Spring
Valborg in Uppsala is more than just a holiday – it’s a celebration filled with traditions, joy, and community, attracting tens of thousands of visitors every year. For Uppsala students, Valborg is the ultimate highlight of the year, with festivities lasting for several days. The celebrations include everything from river rafting and champagne breakfasts to picnics in parks and grand nation parties.
Welcoming New Students – Introduction Weeks in Uppsala
Every semester, new students are welcomed to Uppsala with an extensive introduction program, or “inspark”, organized by the student nations and unions. The purpose of the program is to create a sense of community, help new students get to know the city and university, and give them a taste of Uppsala’s vibrant student life.
What Happens During the Inspark?
The introduction period usually lasts several weeks and includes a wide range of activities:
- City and campus tours – A great way to explore Uppsala and its main attractions, such as the nations, university buildings, and the best study spots.
- Games and competitions – Inspark is known for its playful spirit, with many team-based activities designed to build friendships and foster a sense of community.
- Themed parties and formal dinners – Many nations organize themed events and formal sittings (“sittningar”) for new students. This is a great opportunity to experience nation life, dress up, and enjoy festive meals.
- Mentor groups – New students are divided into mentor groups led by older students, who help answer questions, show them around, and create a welcoming environment.
Gasques – Festive Dinners with Songs and Tradition
A gasque is a classic student event that blends great food, drinks, songs, and entertainment. Gasques are hosted by the student nations and are a central part of Uppsala’s student life. The evening begins with a formal dinner, where attendees dress up and enjoy a multi-course meal. During the dinner, students sing traditional snaps songs, listen to speeches, and sometimes enjoy performances or spex.
After the dinner, the night continues with a lively party, where dancing and mingling take place at the nation’s club. Gasques often follow specific themes, making each one a unique experience – from spring gasques to anniversary gasques or formal balls. For many students, gasques are one of the best ways to experience Uppsala’s vibrant community and traditions.
Academic Quarter – A Charming Custom
The academic quarter is a charming and practical tradition that remains alive in Uppsala to this day. It means that lectures and events often start 15 minutes after the scheduled time. For example, if a lecture is listed as starting at 10:00, it will actually begin at 10:15 – giving students a little extra time to get from one lecture hall to another or simply relax.
