Playful at Bror Hjort’s House
The permanent exhibition at Bror Hjort’s House is presented in the artist’s former home and studio in Uppsala. Bror Hjort is considered one of the greatest modernists in Swedish art, making this museum a must-visit.
The museum also features an art gallery with temporary exhibitions. In October and November, you can see textile sculptures by Emilia Sundqvist, an artist who creates captivating figures with visible handmade seams. Her sculptures interpret the demands and expectations of adult life in a playful and humorous way.
From late November until January 2026, the exhibition “Everything Blooms Against Black” takes over. Around thirty oil paintings, watercolours, and drawings from artist Hilding Linnqvist’s early works will be on display. Around 1920, Linnqvist created a series of paintings with dark backgrounds. You’ll also be able to view sketches and drafts, offering insight into his artistic process.
Art Treasures and Portrait History at Gustavianum
At Museum Gustavianum, you can experience one of the country’s largest art collections up close. On the second floor, a rich selection of masterpieces from the Middle Ages through the 20th century is on display, including the famous Augsburg Art Cabinet, donated to Gustav II Adolf in 1632.
In the temporary exhibition called Se på mig! (“Look at Me!”) you can immerse yourself in the fascinating world of portraiture until January 2026. The exhibition explores how portraits have been used to create and preserve memories, as well as to express personal and cultural identity. Here, individuals from across centuries step forward – children, men, women, and even a beloved dog!
Unique and Local at Uppsala Art Museum
Uppsala Art Museum is located in the city’s pink castle and holds a collection of more than 14,000 objects. The permanent exhibitions include prints, ceramics, and art-historical artifacts, complemented by exciting new works from young artists.
Among this season’s temporary exhibitions is the Uppland Salon, showcasing works from 17 artists across Uppsala County. With a vibrant mix of techniques and expressions, this is a unique chance to experience a wealth of local art in one curated exhibition.
Don’t miss the museum’s popular Art Nights, when the doors stay open late on Thursdays, offering concerts, workshops, and sometimes even the chance to create art yourself.
Interaktivt och digitalt på Cube of Art
Cube of Art is a new museum in Uppsala showcasing innovative digital art through interactive techniques. This season features five different exhibitions by artist Mia Fernau and the international ultra-tech art collective n1, where you can take part in the exhibition yourself by drawing, moving, and interacting in various ways. All music and sounds are generated by AI.
You’ll also find what may be the country’s only Escape Cube. Step into an escape room where contemporary art meets retro games and film – and when you book this experience, the entire space is yours.
Beyond the Major Museums
Uppsala also boasts a number of exciting independent galleries and smaller cultural venues with intriguing programs.
Kaleido is a cooperative of craftspeople who showcase their works in a unique setting – the old freight house next to Uppsala Central Station. This season promises spectacular craftwork in wood, textiles, and silversmithing – including Judit Fritz’s striking jewellery.
Uppsala Konstnärsklubb is housed in the charming cultural quarter Walmstedtska on Sysslomansgatan 1. Over the years, it has become a cornerstone of Uppsala’s art scene, with two galleries that continually offer new experiences across a wide range of art forms.
