That’s Emma Frans’s exclamation as she shares her favorite spots in her hometown. Uppsala has been her base throughout most of her life.

Emma grew up near Fyrishov, with many childhood memories tied to its swimming pool and basketball games. After attending a music-focused school—coincidentally in the same year as the Uppsala born popstar Veronica Maggio—Emma pursued biomedical studies at Uppsala University. This was followed by a PhD in epidemiology at Karolinska Institute. She has since combined her research with making science accessible in her own unique way through social media.

— It doesn’t matter how much research we do if no one understands why it’s important. My work is about bridging the gap between academia and the public—often with a touch of humor, Emma explains.

In addition to her social media presence, Emma has written several acclaimed books and articles. Her work has earned her prestigious awards, including the Swedish Grand Journalism Prize and Educator of the Year.

Nature, Culture, and a Dash of Shopping—All by Bike

Emma lives with her husband Hans and their children Klara and Valter in a historic neighborhood near Uppsala University and its Gustavianum museum—a fitting location for a scientist.

This area also offers easy access to cultural experiences, cozy cafés, and nature. When her children were younger, they often played in the nearby Pelleparken. Today, Emma recharges with walks along the Fyris River and runs in Stabbyskogen. She’s a frequent visitor to Uppsala City Theatre, where the current production Rosens Namn, with its scientific themes, is a must-see on her winter bucket list.

– Uppsala has so much to offer—you don’t need to travel far for a change of scenery and new experiences. You can get here in an eco-friendly way by train and then easily explore the city by foot or bike, she says.

Seasonal Delights – Emma’s Christmas Plans

When we meet Emma, Christmas is just around the corner, and the first snow fall have settled on Sysslomansgatan. While sipping tea from a large mug at the iconic Ofvandahls café, Emma shares her favorite seasonal activities.

– Christmas markets are a must this time of year in Uppsala, each with its own unique charm. I’m looking forward to experiencing Uppsala’s historical Christmas market at S:t Eriks Torg, which debuts in 2024. Wiks Castle also hosts a market in a stunning castle setting.

For chilly winter days, Emma recommends Fjällnora Recreation Area, which offers a perfect route for ice skating followed by a wood-fired sauna. And for the family, the Santa Train with Lennakatten is a favorite—a classic steam train that journeys through the snowy Uppland landscape.

Dining and Shopping Highlights

– For an impressive dinner, Villa Anna is my go-to. For a casual meal, Bahn Mi in Kvarnengallerian is a hidden gem with amazing Vietnamese baguettes, Emma says.

For those who love shopping and want to find unique, stylish pieces, Emma suggests vintage treasures at Ruth & Raoul or the stretch of second-hand and antique shops on Drottninggatan.

Continuing to Educate – from Uppsala

In addition to hosting the podcast A-kursen and planning a new book on lifelong learning, Emma is currently considering a children’s book project about research. Whatever this advocate of public education ventures into next, it seems clear that her journey will continue with both feet firmly planted in her beloved Uppsala.
