Wik Castle

Wiks slott

Discover one of Sweden’s best-preserved medieval castles! Wik Castle was built in the late 15th century as a fortress and for centuries stood as one of the strongest strongholds in the Mälaren Valley. Set in a stunning natural landscape just 20 kilometers southwest of Uppsala, right by the waters of Lårstaviken, it’s the perfect destination for a day trip from the city.

Surrounding Wik Castle is a beautiful nature area with a sandy beach, an apple orchard, and scenic hiking trails. The Wik estate has been a local destination for more than 800 years, so it’s no surprise that it’s filled with fascinating history to discover. The castle has, among other things, been besieged by King Gustav Vasa, who once declared war on England. Some even claim that if you’re lucky—or unlucky—you might encounter one of the castle’s resident ghosts still lingering in the area.

In 1923, the County Council of Uppsala (today Region Uppsala) purchased the castle, and it is now home to a hotel and conference center, restaurant, and café. The area also houses a folk high school.

Castle Café and Restaurant

At Wik, you’ll find an organic, KRAV-certified restaurant where vegetables, honey, and apple juice come straight from the estate. Remember to book a table before your visit! During the summer, a charming garden bar opens up in the park between the castle and the swimming area. Bathing guests can also enjoy ice cream, drinks, and snacks from a small summer café by the beach.

Be sure to check Wik Castle’s website for the latest opening hours for the restaurant and cafés.

Wik Beach

In summer, the castle’s beach is a popular destination for day trips. There are piers, a diving tower, and an accessible ramp for swimming. You can relax either on the sandy beach or on the large grassy area nearby.

Stroll Through Wik Park

Wik Park is a natural park open all year round. Take a leisurely walk and enjoy the scenic views among leafy forests, grazing meadows, and the apple orchard. If you visit while the café is open, you can grab a coffee or a treat to enjoy on one of the benches overlooking the waters of Lårstaviken.

Wik Park also features a fun “hut-building land,” where younger visitors can use their imagination and natural materials to build and expand their own little hideouts. Along the paths, you’ll also find clever challenges that keep children entertained during the walk.
