For centuries, legends told that the mounds held the remains of the ancient Norse gods Thor, Odin, and Freya. In the summer of 1846, the Swedish National Heritage Board led the excavation of Odin’s Mound — now known as the Eastern Mound. The dig revealed that it was indeed a burial site. Later, in 1874, the Western Mound (then called Frey’s Mound) was excavated, uncovering another cremation grave. Although the exact individuals buried here remain unknown, the findings suggest they were prominent figures from around 550–625 AD.
Today, you can stroll along the walking paths that wind through the area, getting close to these remarkable historical landmarks while enjoying the surrounding nature.
