The annual tradition of the brave Lucia on the roof takes place on December 13, on the rooftop of Uppsala’s pink castle.
Lucia is a Swedish tradition dating back to medieval times, celebrated each year on December 13th with Lucia processions, candles and songs. It marks the beginning of the Christmas season. At Uppsala Castle, a brave Lucia strides on the castle fence with her shining entourage – this is truly Uppsala’s most unique Lucia celebration! The Lucia Celebration is best seen from the Swan Pond below the castle – it is of course free to be a spectator.
