Choirs, shows and the holiday spirit

Christmas Concerts & Performances in Uppsala 2023

That the music scene becomes a bit extra sparkling during December is as obvious as raisins in the mulled wine. Christmas shows and concerts, along with the occasional Christmas album release, follow each other in a staggering pace, making the selection vast but the choice difficult. Below are some handpicked gems to check out!

2nd-3rd of December - Uppsala Cathedral

Bach's Christmas Oratorio at the Cathedral

Since 1942, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio has marked the beginning of the new church year and the Advent and Christmas season in Uppsala.

– So, this marks the 80th time that Bach’s Christmas Oratorio will be performed at Uppsala Cathedral,” notes organist and choir conductor Milke Falck says. For him, it will be the twentieth time leading the Uppsala Cathedral Choir, the Swedish Baroque Ensemble, and four solo singers in the performance of the first three cantatas of Bach’s great work for Christmas.

2nd-3rd of December - Uppsala Castle

Christmas at the Castle

Allmänna Sången invites you once again to a delightful Christmas concert with both old and new favorites in the beautiful Rikssalen at Uppsala Castle. They combine traditional Christmas music with modern tunes to create a truly magical Christmas experience that will warm your heart in the winter chill. You can look forward to hearing music by composers like Benjamin Britten, Ingvar Lidholm, and Arvo Pärt.

This year, they will have two special guests: soloist Anton Eriksson, a baritone born in Umeå, and pianist Victoria Power. It will be an unforgettable evening!

9-10th of December - University Main Hall

Caprice with OD

On December 9-10, the choir Orphei Drängar (OD) will perform in the University Main Hall with the annually recurring success show, Caprice. OD will present five performances spread over two days.

Guest artists are, as always, a secret. Perhaps it’s the uncertainty and curiosity about what OD will come up with that attracts the audience to Caprice – the performances have been sold out at every concert since the mid-1960s.

9-10th of December - Uppsala konsert & Kongress

Boy's Choir Performance "Goder afton, mitt herrskap"

A choir concert with Uppsala Cathedral Boys’ Choir that cherishes the Swedish Lucia tradition. And when the concert is over, the choir always have a new Christmas tricks up their sleeves…

15th of December - Kulturoasen

Celtic Christmas

Irish and English folk music takes center stage at Christmas Carols, where lively tunes, medieval hymns, and modern classics like “Fairytale Of New York” blend into a fantastic and atmospheric Christmas concert at Kulturoasen.
